Sam Houston State University Provides Intensive Support when Students are Most Vulnerable

At-risk groups are retained nearly 8% less than their peers in postsecondary education. With a $458,101 grant from Greater Texas Foundation, Sam Houston State University will work to minimize this retention gap with a two-tiered approach that provides wraparound services at critical transition points for learners. Pre-care will provide ongoing, relationship-based support during the critical pre-enrollment period when many face intimidating barriers. Preventive care will use identification protocols to target outreach and success coaching support for currently enrolled students identified as at-risk of academic difficulty or stopping out and for learners that are re-entering.
