Greater Texas Foundation Renewing Support of Book Trust Program Within Two Local Schools.

During the 2008-2009 school year, GTF supported the Book Trust program for Kemp Elementary School (Bryan) and College Hills Elementary School (College Station). For the coming school year, these schools will again be supported. Book Trust is an independent charity dedicated to helping people learn to love books, at any age or in any culture. Book Trust provides $7.00 a month for each child supported by the program to buy books from the Scholastic catalog, books that help to build a home library. Most children participating in this program have little access to books and reading outside the classroom, and for many, these books are the first and only things they have ever bought and owned. Not only does the Book Trust program encourage and help kids to become better readers, we know from evaluation that many kids take their books home and read with younger brothers and sisters. This is a program that reaches beyond the bounds of the classroom by taking literacy and a love of reading into the home.

Greater Texas Foundation Receives Community Partnership Award

Greater Texas Foundation representatives recently accepted the University of Houston-Clear Lake’s 2009 Community Partnership Award. The University showed its gratitude for the continued support and partnerships by hosting a breakfast for donors, partners, and friends for their contributions toward the University’s success.

Greater Texas Foundation has supported the University of Houston-Clear Lake since 2003, by helping to establish the Removing Educational Barriers Endowment Fund, which provides financial assistance to first generation college students.

$70,000 to Book Trust to provide books free of charge on a monthly basis to approximately 1,100 children who attend Kemp Elementary School (Bryan) or College Hills Elementary School (College Station). Through the program, K-6th graders choose up to $7 of books monthly from Scholastic Books Clubs catalogs. The program lasts throughout the school year, which allows each child to add approximately 20 titles to their home library. By providing books to students eligible for the free/reduced lunch program, Book Trust reaches students who may have never had the opportunity to choose and own their own books.

Brazos Valley Worldfest: Texas A&M University

$10,000 to Texas A&M University to support the first Brazos Valley Worldfest (BVW). The one day educational event, a collaboration of Texas A&M University, Blinn College, Brazos Valley Children’s Museum, City of College Station, City of Bryan, and local schools, is intended to promote and celebrate the international diversity of the Brazos Valley. In addition to inviting local schools to participate, a Texas Essential Knowledge & Skills (TEKS) aligned curriculum is being developed to provide schools with more international content.
